Javelin throwers have huge range and will snipe out archers. The only way to respond to them is really just horsemen, but if you have a spearman type unit like a Limitanei, you can keep them in check.
Bait with javelin throwers, then use archers to pick off spearmen and crossbows to pick off elephants.
There is this timing for the Byzantines when they have the first batch of longbows, a few horsemen and plenty of Limitanei where Delhi simply cannot have enough to actually take the sites when it comes to this mass. And the very specific build order to do this is not gathering any more gold than necessary, pulling off of the stone somewhat early, and making sure there's plenty of villagers on the berries to get the olive oil needed to get that mercenary out early.
It's a good choice to decap the middle sacred site with your main army because it makes it difficult for Delhi to run through the middle to the other sacred sites to deny your decaps.
You can go all the way to four Cisterns relatively early on, and it's kind of necessary because you want to outscale the Delhi. You want to stick around in Feudal Age for a long time while still outscaling Delhi, because baseline Delhi with the Ghazi Raiders has got the better horseman unit.
Wheelbarrow in general is very nice for the Byzantines as they start off on the berries and berries have more walking time. Especially when your opponent like the Delhi Sultanate is most likely going to be starting off with Ghazi Raiders, that early Wheelbarrow helps your villagers potentially escape dicey situations.
When you are playing against Delhi, their upgrades take a while. Even with many scholars, there's a little bit of an opening to do damage because their upgrades aren't in yet.
Upgrades definitely also something that you want to keep up with the Delhi. You know that they're going to get theirs in for free, but at a later point in time. So, if you just get yours in earlier, you're going to be able to pay them off much quicker and kind of get even like that.
Get his mercenaries at sort of 5 to 10 longbows. Ideally, 10 is when you can start really contesting those sites. Plus, some horsemen would be necessary as well.
If you actually forgo mining any gold after going for the age up as Byzantines, you are able to have your batch of longbows, the first one with a good number of Limitanei and some horsemen just in time as the Delhi moves out to get the sacred site and you're able to fully and effectively contest them.
Delhi doesn't normally begin spears, so the Grand Winery is pretty free for the Byzantines.
If you're Byzantines, you want to take continuous decisive engagements. If you're Delhi, you want to raid, you want to avoid long drawn out fights, you want to just do hit and run strategies. You want to test the sacred site, and if your opponent goes for that, you want to run away from that, go to another sacred site because your opponent's army, the Byzantine army, also isn't as fast. They're mostly just infantry.
