Desert Raiders have 5 melee armor, which is a lot. It really helps against knights. In small engagements that bit of armor can actually help edge out a win when the numbers are scarce.
You need two knights, maybe three, to outdamage the healing of dervishes once the knights' charge damage bonus runs out.
The additional charge damage from French knights makes them one of the most potent knights against desert raiders.
Camel lancers are actually worse against knights than desert raiders.
Camel Lancers minus 20% damage for all horse cavalry. It's pretty significant when that's the entire thing your civilization is based around, like the French.
If those camels do get hurt, they just run back and get healed back to full. French knights need a pretty expensive upgrade to heal themselves; Chivalry is not an easy investment for the French.
