A lot of French players don't mind putting the first French knight more defensively, especially if the Golden Horde player has already queued up a spear, since that first knight won't hit as well as it usually would.
Double stable into mass knights makes a lot of sense early on to contest the Torguud effectively as well as the Khan.
Would you place a barracks here as French? Never.
And these long fights do work out in favor for the Golden Horde. As long as the Batu Khan is alive, he's going to be continuously throwing out these attack signaling arrows, which if the fight goes long go all the way up to I believe it's like 30% bonus damage that the units do.
When Golden Horde goes up to Castle Age, that might give French the timing point to pull the trigger.
The School of Cavalry finishes before the Golden Horde age up, so the first knight can decide to go straight for the base.
French can frontline with archers against Golden Horde because their composition (Torguud, spears, horsemen) doesn't kill archers quickly.
Torguud have a lot of health but until you get castle age they can't refill the health so French knights could just poke, raid, move away and grind you down over time.
The Karash give plus one plus one armor to all nearby units, making them an obnoxious thing you have to eliminate. Because they have such low HP, you're going to waste a lot more damage overkilling them to get rid of them.
