How to beat
Macedonianas French
Matchup tips
The good thing about playing knights over archers/spears is that you should be losing fewer units early on to Macedonians, meaning fewer Runestone charges.
Transitioning to mass Arbalétriers is the logical end goal for French; it lets you snipe Riddari one by one, and Macedonians don't have anything that can beat Arbalétriers.
As French, you need gold, but by taking it you also deny silver from Macedonians. It's a double win.
If a spearman is charging and has the Riddari champion nearby, he will charge with faster movement speed than knights, 1.72.
Spears do like one to two damage to Varangian units.
If you don't have gold, you can't get upgrades, but you need a lot of gold in order to get the silver required to get those upgrades. You actually need to put up a building that costs like 100 resources to effectively get the silver out. A lot of strategies are hinged around that gold and the need to get silver. The Varangian strategy getting the extra plus two armor is crazy in feudal age; the Riddari mass strategies rely on you getting the plus two plus three damage. So it always circulates around this idea of silver.
Varangians in long feudal age can go up to six melee armor. Knights still do decent damage against them, but once there's only knights, you can realistically activate berserking and they will trade incredibly well with berserking against the knights.
