How to beat
Japaneseas Order of the Dragon
Matchup tips
It's always the question whether you really want to go for the gilded knight up against the mounted samurai. The charge is one of your biggest damage sources for the Gilded Knight and having that blocked by the deflective armor does kind of devalue that matchup. Typically, when Order of the Dragon has a same unit type army composition, like knights against gilded knights, spearmen against gilded spearmen, the Order of the Dragon pretty much always wins those engagements. But deflective armor just changes the entire story.
Order of the Dragon have the strongest spearmen in the game. That's a choice they could go for against Japanese mounted samurai, especially with a Burgrave Palace. Getting cheaper and quicker spearmen is a massive boon; often Burgrave pulls ahead of Regnitz Cathedral depending on how many relics you're actually able to secure.
Onamusha counter men-at-arms, so they are valuable against OOTD if they go for men-at-arms.
Gilded Knight actually even though you do have the deflective armor on Mounted Samurai, Gilded Knight still trades a lot better up against them. they have so much damage, so much more attack speed as well that these individual engagements mean that one-on-one or even two-on-one the Gilded Knights trade excellently.
These crossbows with eight should pretty much be about able to oneshot these mounted samurai.
I guess he's got some passive food from the Kura Storehouse, but the Aachen Chapel for the dragon just feels like it's going to pay way better dividends.
Gilded Spearman are still a really good answer to Mounted Samurai.
Gilded Spearman have a really good matchup against mounted Samurai — it's one of the few civilizations that might be able to deal with the mounted Samurai. Alternatively, Gilded Knights provide mobility and tankiness, and you can pull them back and heal them up.
Gilded Spearman are melee units, which means they take bonus damage from Shinobi — that's not ideal. Gilded Archers do work, but one disadvantage is that every Gilded Archer is very expensive.
Gilded Horsemen are not a good matchup against Mounted Samurai, but they will absolutely obliterate Onna-Musha.
Onna-Musha get a bonus against Gilded Knights, but Gilded Horsemen are light units, so it's not easy to dive under Town Centers or towers with them.
Foot Samurai with deflective armor and high baseline armor mean you need armor-piercing power or Handcannoneers to deal with them.
If Gilded Spearmen ever close the distance, they almost one-shot the Onna-Musha.
